Livebait in Leeds was a surprisingly good lunch – it didn’t quite look like I thought it would from the outside but with nice exposed brick and plenty of natural light despite being slightly underground, it made for a pleasant atmosphere.
The main point of the whole excursion was for the crab but we also ordered a couple of prawn starters. There was a special on the board for Tempura Tiger Prawns, so that was what I ordered. Despite not having a great deal of faith in the British interpretation of “tempura”, I always order it, with the hope that it will come with a light batter with a huge juicy prawn within. Unfortunately, this was little more than battered prawns, though were also very good. The half pint of prawns were just that – a bunch of prawns in a half pint glass.
When our mains came, I was suitably impressed. We went for a hot crab – this came with garlic butter. Literally a crab on a plate, if you want salad or chips you’ll have to order this separately. While we both had a side dish, this wasn’t really needed as the crab was massive with loads of meat.
All in all, I’d come back here again if I really fancied another whole crab or for maybe a long afternoon drink and a snack in the sun.
